Description

We are hiring a Healthcare Data Engineer to own technical implementation of customer data pipelines. You'll take raw claims, eligibility, clinical, HR, and engagement data from health plans, TPAs, PBMs, and point solutions and transform it into Abett’s standardized data models using SQL, dbt, Python, and Dagster. You will manage multiple concurrent implementations, ensure system-wide data quality, and partner with Product to ensure scalability and reusability.

You’ll excel if you thrive on jumping into complex, real-world data sets, bringing order through data modeling, and creating trustworthy data pipelines at scale.

You will:

  • Own data pipelines (including claims, eligibility, HR, engagement, clinical, and more) connecting clients and vendors
  • Translate vendor data layouts into Abett’s standard data models
  • Configure pipelines, SFTP connections, mappings, and data quality validations.
  • Troubleshoot data issues and work directly with client/vendor technical teams to resolve discrepancies.
  • Contribute to reusable data models and quality frameworks that reduce custom work across clients.
  • Surface integration pain points and edge cases to inform Product and Engineering roadmaps.

This role is deeply technical and customer-facing: you will spend most of your time hands-on with data, while also representing the platform’s technical requirements to external stakeholders.

You’ll have the opportunity to shape how data can transform employee benefits and health outcomes. You will be taking on a high-impact position at the intersection of customer delivery and product definition, joining a collaborative, mission-driven team with deep expertise in healthcare and benefits, while enjoying competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and the flexibility of a remote-first environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pipeline Configuration: Build and deploy data pipelines using SQL, Python, and cloud-native tools
  • Data Modeling: Map vendor data feeds to Abett’s standardized data models
  • Validation, Monitoring, & Maintenance: Implement automated checks for data quality, completeness, and timeliness. Rapidly troubleshoot issues when they arise
  • Scale & Reusability: Develop pipeline standards and templates that move from one-off integrations towards standardized connectors
  • Integration Support: Partner with Implementation and Client Services counterparts to support kickoff through go-live
  • Vendor & Customer Engagement: Work closely with customer and vendor technical counterparts to design integrations and resolve data quality issues
  • Product Feedback Loop: Identify recurring integration patterns and inefficiencies, propose improvements to productized workflows
  • Documentation: Maintain clear technical specifications and implementation notes for reuse and auditability
Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • 4+ years' experience in data engineering, data integration, or solutions engineering roles
  • 3+ years’ direct experience working with healthcare, benefits, and/or health insurance data (eligibility, claims, EMR/EHR, Rx). You should be fluent in core healthcare data concepts, including coding terminology, claims management, and enrollment/eligibility relationships
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with Python for data transformation
  • Experience with modern ETL/ELT tools and data platforms, including dbt and Dagster
  • Understanding of data exchange protocols (SFTP, APIs, HL7, EDI)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex data quality issues
  • Strong communication skills and comfort interfacing with external vendors and clients.
  • Ability to work independently in ambiguous, evolving environments.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Compensation range: $130,000 / year - $150,000 / year
  • Stock options
  • Employer-paid health, dental, and vision benefits available
  • Unlimited PTO
  • 401(k)
  • Flexible hours and fully remote position
